Project Impact is a student volunteer group at BIS. We have been working with Bình Lợi to bring attention to the issue of street children living in Sài Gòn.
Bình Lợi is a social centre run by two compassionate, hard-working ladies providing food, shelter, and education to over 40 street children.
After campaigning to raise awareness and funds for their cause for over 3 months, we finally got the opportunity to visit our community partner on the Sunday of April 3rd. During the visit, we were able to get a chance to meet the kids supported by the social centre. In order to get to know them and some of their interests, we ran an arts & crafts session, played some sports games (including a traditional Vietnamese game most of our members had never played before), and asked them to share some of their stories and dreams. It was absolutely heart-warming to hear their aspirations to join the national badminton team or to work hard so they can pay back the favour to their caretakers.
In addition to playing with the kids, we interviewed Ms. Cúc, the founder of Bình Lợi, and had the privilege of listening to her astounding story of how the social centre started.
She shared with us what inspired her to start the centre, where she found the street children, and the difficulties she faces providing support for over 40 children. We hope to use this interview to create a documentary to raise awareness for Bình Lợi, which we aim to work on in Term 3.
