Book Week at APP

30 September 2016

In Primary we have been enjoying Book Week, a celebration of the written word, the chance to escape to another world through the writing of others. At An Phu Primary, that involved a wide range of activities and visiting authors.

Book Week in Year 4

Y4 have been participating in a range of activities to celebrate Book Week at APP including visiting the book fair in the library, buddy class reading, meeting our visiting author and making their very own books.

Several weeks ago the first part of the ‘Talk for Writing’ cycle began. This involved the children familiarising themselves with the original story of Leon and The Place Between and investigating the author’s use of language. They then invented their own version of the story with some interesting twists and tweaks while still maintaining the original structure of Leon and the Place Between.

Throughout the unit children have been building up their own ‘Magpie Books’ which are writing journals containing useful phrases and ideas that might be useful for future writing projects. These proved to be a fantastic resource for creating their own stories. Most of the children’s books are now complete and are something that they will treasure for a long time.

Book Week in our LS Department

We were really lucky in LS this week to have Mr Leon visit us. He came to read to some of the children. He read Windy Mindy by David Walliams to the MP3 children and A Squish and a Squeeze and A Room on the Broom both by Julia Donaldson to some of the MP1 and MP2 children.

It is very important to hear books read in such an animated way and to be able to discuss our favourite character, or how the characters might be feeling. We can meet new vocabulary and enjoy word order, too. With great expression and plenty of actions he really brought the books alive for us. Thank you, Mr Leon!
