Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 24/01/17

24 January 2017

This week we were treated to a wonderful display of Vietnamese singing, dancing, drumming and music co-ordinated by Ms Mai, Head of Vietnamese, our school staff and the students. Practices for our Tet assembly have been echoing throughout the campus for several weeks and it was lovely to see the final performances in all their splendour. All teams were enthusiastically represented -  cleaning staff, teaching assistants, maintenance staff, as well as many other teams who do so much to keep the school running so efficiently. Many of the our teachers also celebrated the occasion by wearing Ao Dai’s and the campus was a riot of colour. Following the Tet assembly many students enjoyed sharing their good wishes  by writing Tet cards to our wonderful support staff. We also welcomed visiting calligraphers who amazed students with their skills as they created beautifully written personalised scrolls for Tet.

Khanh Le from 12H reflects on what the Tet assembly meant to her:

For the Tet Assembly this year 2017, I have had a chance and been honored to become a part of my Vietnamese team, who presented 2 performances with the aim of enhancing and celebrating the traditional Tet holiday. I felt so proud not only to participate in the opening “Drum" performance but also to introduce my country’s diverse cultures to my international friends. In this performance, our mixed group of boys and girls from year 10 to 12, showed our passion in presenting the Vietnamese cultural act for the Tet Holiday. I was also involved in the dance item “Bống Bống Bang Bang" which is based on old Vietnamese fairy tale. We all experienced so much fun while we practiced and rehearsed our dance together over several weekends so that we could  perform at our best to BIS teachers and students on this years Tet assembly. I personally think this is one of the most memorable moments of my life, and I hope me and my friends can have another opportunity to continue to perform in Tet Assembly next year!

An additional reflection by a student and photos appear on our website.

Tet Essentials

For those of you who are staying in HCMC for the holidays I highly recommend a visit to the outstanding flower displays on Nguyen Hue Street which are a feature of Tet in Vietnam each year. The Santa Fe Survival Guide to Tet is also very useful. As well as giving background to the celebration of Tet it also details opening and closing hours of businesses around D2 and the city over the holiday period.
