Mr Simon Higham: Weekly Update 15/12/17

15 December 2017

What an incredible final week it has been an An Phu Primary Campus this week. Our community has well and truly come together to celebrate this Christmas season and also the many successes that have been achieved since our first day back to school on Wednesday 23rd August.

Xmas 1

One of this week’s highlights has to be the wonderful Carol Concert that took place on Tuesday evening, under the stars. Well done to all of the children in our many choirs, orchestras and ensembles who worked hard and gave their very best to produce an event of this quality.

F3 Christmas

In walking through our campus this week, I came across something that has been synonymous to our school for a long time now – warmth, respect and friendship. From a distance, a group of year 6 children approached me along the International Walkway and I noticed that they were a mixture of children from both An Phu Primary Campus and Tu Xuong Primary campuses. They were happily talking to each other excited about the prospect of working together very soon. When I asked them what they were doing, they replied that they were ‘sharing their new campus together’. The children from An Phu further stated that they were giving a guided tour of the campus to their new friends and when I asked how the Tu Xuong children felt, they stated, ‘excited’. It is moments like these that one really does see the attributes from our Aide Memoire being lived and breathed across our school – that is special and in our view, a unique element of our whole school environment and the educational journey that our children experience at BIS HCMC.

Xmas 2

We would like to remind you of the amalgamation arrangements for after the Christmas holiday and have again, included them in this week’s Update (see below) so that you are fully aware of procedures once the new Early Years and Infant Campus opens for Year 1 children on Monday 15th January. If you would like to read more about our new campus that is on schedule within the set timeframes, please click here.

We would like to thank all of our parents for your continued support and trust that you have given us during this term. Working in partnership is extremely important to us at BIS HCMC and without this, our children would not flourish as much as they do within our school environment.

International Week 2018 – Reminder

International Week

International week has traditionally been held in the first half of Term 2 at the Primary Campus. Due to our phased amalgamation with TX, we have made the decision to postpone International Week until Term 3. As a leadership team and after consultation with the International Week committee, we felt it would be unfair to students, teachers and parents to hold such a huge event when children and teachers will only just be settling into their new classrooms and campuses.

We will confirm the new date ASAP but it is most likely to be in June towards the end of Term 3. We feel this date will allow all students to have settled into the Infant and Junior Campus and will also provide a fitting end to our amalgamation as we come together as a school to celebrate such a special event for our international community.

We would like to thank all of our parent community for your support and understanding about these changes.

What makes a hero but more importantly, what makes a BIS HCMC hero? Read more about what Mr Lee Falconer, Assistant Headteacher – Teaching and Learning at the APS Campus thinks in this post after observing some of our Year 2 children working with their Year 8 learning partners.

APP Students v Teachers Netball Match

Students V Teachers Netball Match (7)-min

Last Friday, staff and students battled it out to win the first ever BIS HCMC Staff Vs Students netball match. The side-lines were crammed full of eager students cheering on their fellow Year 5 and 6 student’s netball team. It was a fast, rough and energetic game with lots of interesting “interpretations” of some rules by the teachers! Read about the highlights from this game and what the eventual score was in this post by Ms Pauline Tran, EAL Teacher.

Thien Phuoc Christmas Party

Thien Phuoc Christmas Party

BIS HCMC had a lovely time visiting Thien Phuoc Foster Home this week for our annual Christmas party. Staff and students from all three campuses went to spread some holiday merriment to the children living at Thien Phuoc. More information about this Christmas party can be found in this post by Ms Samantha Baker, Year 1 Teacher and Community Service Leader.

Community Football Tournament – 2017-18

Community Football Tournament

The annual BIS HCMC Community Football Tournament is a perfect opportunity for students from all three campuses and children from our local community partners to integrate and enjoy a morning of football together. Read more about all of the details of this very special morning of sport in this post by Luke Neville, Community Service Campus Leader.

TET Collection 2018

Tet Shoe Box Collection

Tết is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture, honouring the arrival of spring. The celebration brings with it delicious food like bánh chưng, bánh dày, dưa hấu and traditional customs such as ancestor worship, wishing New Year's greetings and giving lucky money.

This year, we are doing the collection slightly differently to how we have before. The concept is that all of the children in our community partners will receive a Tet gift from us in the form of a shoe box, similar to the Christmas Shoe Box Appeals in the UK.

To find out more about how you can donate, please click on this post by The Community Team.

Safeguarding at school – it’s everyone’s responsibility

safeguarding poster-min

If, during your visit to school, you have any reason to be concerned about the safety of a young person, please contact the Designated Safeguarding Person.

Please note that CCTV cameras are in operation at all times across the campus.

Fundinotots is a friendly place to meet other parents with young children. We provide an informal play environment with opportunities to take part in a range of activities such as painting, soft play, sand pit, water play, storytelling, large play apparatus, library time and music sessions. Refreshments are provided at each session for parents and children.

Find out more about fundinotots here.

BIS HCMC Holiday Sports Camps

Thank you to all those parents who have signed their children up for the upcoming Holiday Sports Camps to be held at the An Phu campuses during our Christmas break.

For all of the details with regards to dates and times of these events, please read this post by Mr Philip Husband, Director of Sport and Head of Secondary PE.

Traffic Flow

It only takes one car to stop the traffic flow so please ensure that this stretch of road is used for drop off and pick up only. As always, your support in this matter is very much appreciated.

  • Never stop on or near to a pedestrian crossing – in order to ensure that our families can cross the road safely, please instruct your driver to park as far away from the main gates as possible to avoid congestion. Try walking a short distance to keep cars down to a minimum.
  • No cars should be parked for long periods of time outside of school – ask your driver to meet you at a convenient location away from the school gates and please ask them to never double park as this stops the flow of traffic at peak times.
  • Never U Turn along the stretch of road outside both AP1 and AP2 – tell your driver to drive away from school and if they have to U Turn, please do so on the wider, less congested roads. Try the route past AP1 along Nguyen Van Huong, as an alternative way to get home – it may take a few extra minutes driving but it will save the time you spend in traffic.
  • Ask your driver to show respect to our guards and follow their instructions – they are there to keep you all safe and have a difficult job when drivers ignore their instructions.
  •  Explain to your driver that their actions reflect upon your family – ask them to respect all of our school community to make our school the very best that it can be.

We all have our part to play – thank you.

Always remember to Stop, Drop and Go to keep the traffic flowing.

A reminder that the fee is VND500k with a football kit and reduced to VND350k if your child re-uses their kit from last year. We will check all registration forms and issue an appropriate refund if a parent has paid the higher fee before the discounted amount was announced.

Coaches needed for Y2/3 and 4/5/6 & Administration Volunteers

We are still looking for more Parent Coaches for the Y2/3 and Y4/5/6 teams. For each year group we want to make small coach teams (with parent and student coaches) so we/you are more flexible in case of you have to travel/have other commitments. Don’t worry too much about experience, as you will work in a team. Let us know if you can run one session and/or help to run a session each week.

*Please remember children need to wear sports kit.

*Please remember all children need shin pads with football socks to protect their legs.

*Please remember they must bring a water bottle.

*Hat or cap is optional

*You can buy Football socks from the BIS Uniform Shop, or any sports shop.

*For parents who are unable to stay throughout the whole training, would appreciate to arrive 10 minutes before your children's session ends to pick them.

*Please remind children if they are wearing football boots, they are not allowed in the basketball court and the playground area as their boots might damage the floor surfaces.

And Finally………

Christmas ( M.E. Miro )

Christmas is more than a day in December,

It’s all of those things that we love to remember,

It’s carollers singing familiar refrains,

Bright coloured stockings and shiny toy trains,

Streamers of tinsel and glass satin balls,

Laughter that rings through the house and its halls,

Christmas is more than a day in December,

It’s the magic and the love,

That we’ll always remember.

We wish you a very pleasant and relaxing holiday and a peaceful and prosperous Christmas time ahead. All the best and ‘thank you’ to the BIS HCMC families who are moving on to different countries and schools and welcome to all of the new families who will be joining us for Term 2.

To all others, see you again on Monday 8th January 2018.
