U19 Boys SISAC City Football Championships 2017

23 March 2017

A team with great potential that has been evident all season in their ‘friendly’ preparations – but could our U19 Boys go all the way and reclaim the top spot at the SISAC City Championships?

  • British International School, HCMC, U19 Boys SISAC City Football Champions 2017

Allocated in a group with ISHCMC and TIS, our first game started at the hottest time of the day. Despite the weather, we were determined to beat our arch rivals whom we lost against in our friendly fixture.

It was evident that BIS HCMC had improved significantly as we were playing great football and following formation advice from Mr. Husband. The game proved to be an intense match as both teams had equal chances as well as each missing penalties. At the end, the game ended in a goalless draw where BIS HCMC and ISHCMC both shared points equally.

After an hour’s rest, we were up against TIS. British International School, HCMC, had the advantage over TIS as they were playing back to back match which meant that our opposition were physically and mentally tired. After few minutes into the game, BIS HCMC grabbed a lead through Ryan Kim’s goal which was soon followed by a screamer from Nick Schuster. We had to protect our 2-0 lead in order to top our group. Great communication between players allowed for a solid defence as everyone contributed to preventing TIS from attacking. The final whistle blew a few minutes later which allowed BIS HCMC to progress into Semi Finals as the leader of our group.

We were up against RISS in the semi-finals, who had finished 2nd in their group. Despite the fact that BIS HCMC had won the previous friendly fixture comfortably, we made sure not to underestimate RISS. We started to build our tempo to a standard that RISS couldn’t follow. Soon after, their four men defence line started to crack which gave BIS HCMC a few opportunities to score. Once again, Ryan Kim scored a sensational goal where he chipped the ball over the goalkeeper and provided BIS with 1-0 lead. Vu Luu, often called VuDini (Vu+Maldini), scored an absolute screamer to extend our lead and soon after, he netted another goal to the bottom corner. The final score was 3-0, and we were through to the finals against the hosts, SSIS.

All of us were determined to win this year’s tournament ever since the beginning of this season and this was our chance to shine. Our legs were giving up and we were extremely exhausted but we were sure to give everything that we had for one last time.

Determination, combined with teamwork produced a few chances for BIS HCMC. Ryan Kim narrowly missed the goal as his attempt was directed onto the post. Our heads didn’t drop despite the fact that Felix, Josh and Nick Schuster pulled their legs during the game. The intense match continued without goals from either side, meaning that the final would be decided by penalties.

After the final whistle, Floris, Nick Schuster and Ryan stepped up to bravely take penalties for BIS HCMC. Floris and Nick Schuster both scored amazing penalties to the bottom corners whereas the second kicker of SSIS missed his shot. This gave chance for Ryan to lead BIS HCMC into the victory for the first time since 2014/2015 season.

Ryan’s powerful shot sent SSIS keeper to the wrong side which was immediately followed by us piling on top of Ryan to celebrate our victory. With trophy in our hands and terrible singing, we returned to BIS HCMC with happy faces.

On behalf of the team, I would like to thank Mr Husband, Coach McAloon, Coach O’Brien for their input into the team. Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we have throughout the season. Thank you for believing in the team and for giving up your time to coach us.
