Spring Concert 17

Reports from previous Graduate Assistants:

My year spent with the BIS HCMC Music Department has been challenging, exciting, and extremely busy! I have gained experience in teaching, of which previously I had none, besides private tutoring, so coming into a classroom and providing teaching assistance to large classes of primary students was definitely a new and challenging experience. As well as classroom assistance, I have had the opportunity to involve myself with much of the extra-curricular music at BIS as well. Running the APP Junior String Orchestra has helped me to become more confident leading ensembles and I have also improved my conducting skills – one of my targets for the year. The role is very varied and I have been involved with most aspects of the department, such as creating displays, providing musical and classroom support, and providing events assistance in the very busy concert seasons. I encourage any graduate who is keen to expand their skills in all aspects of music to apply for this position.

Annabelle Howell 2016-2017

The past two years at BIS HCMC have been a truly life changing experience. It has been an opportunity to work with a team of supportive and highly trained professional musicians within the music department and teach exceptional students. I am now an even more accomplished and confident musician than when I graduated from RWCMD, and feel confident to go onto my PGCE next year. I have had wonderful and varied musical opportunities with a range of ages in a diverse environment. My highlights have included developing the string programme here and at primary level, making ABRSM theory club fun! Vocal coaching for Chicago production, teaching my own year 7 class, and contributing to the IGCSE composition students. I feel that I have been able to make a difference to students here and am certain they have had an impact upon me. I will carry the BIS HCMC experience with me for the rest of my teaching career.

Julia Tappin 2014-2016

The past two years at BIS HCMC have blown away any of my preconceptions of what it means to do an internship, there is no standard week, or even day in this role. I have developed as both an individual and as a member of a team, with the support of the three dedicated and enthusiastic music teachers at the Secondary campus, and from working as part of a wider cross-campus team and alongside other departments within the school. The role has allowed me to hone my arrangement and composition skills, alongside my performance and instrumental teaching, where I have had the opportunity to make music with many talented and passionate students. Alongside the continuous series of concerts, productions and events, one of my highlights has been working with both the primary and secondary schools to build a growing brass tradition, giving me the opportunity to refine my coaching skills across a range of ages and abilities. I have also been given the opportunity to explore my creative side, not just in musical performance and arrangement, but also in design work and organisation, giving me an insight in to the staggering amount of work that goes on behind the scenes of such a busy department. I was given the opportunity to stay on for a second year and throughout this I have been fortunate to be mentored and advised by three knowledgeable teachers, who have supported me wholeheartedly in my PGCE applications and continue to prove an inspiration to which I will aspire throughout and beyond my PGCE course next year.
