On Sunday 23rd April the Community Football Tournament took place in the An Phu Field and bought together over 100 students from Year 5, 6 & 7 as well as students from Binh An School, Binh Tho School, Huynh Van Ngoi School, Poussieres de Vie and the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation.
Students were enthusiastic to get started and arrived at the field from 7.30am to find out their teams. BIS HCMC and partner students were mixed into 12 teams and were given a free team shirt, courtesy of the AP1 PTG.
This year we also had a great response from Year 10 and 12 students who were eager to take on the responsibility of being team coach! They did a wonderful job in creating a friendly atmosphere for the students as well as co-ordinating their games and activities for the morning.
Games kicked off at 8.30am with each of the 12 teams taking on their competitors. After the knockout rounds, the teams with the best scores entered the semi-final round, where a few games ended with a penalty shootout. The final game came down to Dortmund and Manchester City, with Dortmund coming out victorious after a gruelling match ending in a penalty shootout.
Every player was awarded a silver medal of participation, while the players from Dortmund were proud to wear their winners’ gold medals! Not only did they play excellent games of football, from the start they worked solidly as a team and by the end they had made some great friends.
The day was a success, and the Community Service Team would like to thank all the parents who came out to enjoy the tournament. A special thanks goes to Fox Football, who came out in support of the tournament to help supervise the teams as well as sourcing the football kits.
The Loop and the AP1 canteen donated Banh Mis for all the players, which helped keep their energy up through the final rounds of the tournament! Thank you to the AP1 and AP2 PTG who supported with drinks and fruit for the players which was extremely important on such a hot and sunny day!
The Community Service Team would also like to thank the amazing staff and students from BIS HCMC who volunteered their time as coaches, referees, scorers, photographers, nurses, sound technicians, and all the other jobs that made the tournament a great success!
And last but certainly not least, we would like to thank all the players who came out to play! The players worked together as a team, despite never having played together before and often overcoming a language barrier. What inspiring community spirit!
