Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 02/06/2017

02 June 2017

Dear Parents,

I was reminded this week of the trust that parents instill in us by sending their children to BIS for their education when I saw our Year 13 students stand proudly on the stage at our Graduation Ceremony. It is a very special occasion for families and teachers to see these young people who have spent their formative years ‘Learning Together’ as ‘Global Citizens’. Each of these students represents the values in our aide memoir: Integrity, Respect, Care, Enquiry, Reflection and Perseverance. Our longest attending student joined the school in 2002 and together our graduates represented 544 years of education at BIS. A proud moment indeed!

I look forward to meeting up with parents on Monday evening when we will be presenting details of the ways in which we will be assessing and reporting student learning at the Secondary Campus from the next academic year. This event will also include the opportunity to hear from a panel of students on aspects of their BIS experience. Please bring along your questions for the students or better still send them to me before the event on Monday evening. The presentation takes place at 6.30pm in the auditorium.

Graduation Ceremony

On Saturday 27th May, over 300 family members, friends and BIS staff gathered at the Park Hyatt Hotel to attend the Graduation Ceremony for the BIS Class of 2017. As always, we celebrated the success of our Year 13 students in style, with many awards being presented to mark the occasion, and just a few tears being shed! The Year 13 students then attended their prom at the Park Hyatt hotel in the evening. We wish all our graduates the very best as they head off to universities around the world. Our developing Alumni program helps students to stay in touch with staff and each other providing support and networking opportunities as our students progress through life. Be Ambitious!

Year 7-9 House Science Quiz

House Analytical Chemistry 17-5985.jpg

John Sykes from Year 9 gives us an overview of the recent House Science Quiz:

On Friday the 19th of May, we had the House Science Quiz. There was one team representing each of the houses with people participating from Years 7-9. The ten rounds that took place consisted of general knowledge, element anagrams, Science themed pop songs, current affairs in Science, famous scientists, science pictures, Physics, Biology and Chemistry specific questions. We participated for an hour and in the end team Hanoi (Mai Van Trinh, William Nguyen, Minh Pham, John Sykes) won with a very respectable total of 76 points. Saigon came in second place, just a couple of points behind. The winners and the runners up received prizes of sweets and goodies. However, the winning team also got lift passes for a week!

IB Visual Arts Exhibition

This week we celebrated with our Year 13 Visual Arts students the exhibition of their work which showcased a diverse collection of techniques and themes. Congratulations to each of the students for hosting their first public exhibition at Mix & Paint Bar Live in District 2.

The exhibition is now displayed on the third floor of the Secondary Campus.

We showcase an insightful you tube video of the artists reflecting on their work.

Teachers and students from all four departments will be on hand to talk about their subject and the things that they are showcasing. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the elements of school life that parents rarely get to see.
