Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 12/01/2018

12 January 2018

Dear Parents,

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to all. I trust you have enjoyed a relaxing break full of family time and space to reflect on the events and successes of last year as well as looking forward to the exciting challenges that 2018 may bring. This week we have welcomed new students and their families to the campus and the BIS community - a particularly warm welcome to you all, I look forward to speaking with you all as our new term unfolds.

Our teachers were welcomed back last week by our Principal, Mr Anthony Rowlands who reminded us all of the reward we gain from meeting and overcoming difficulties with a few words of wisdom that could apply to any of us when facing challenge in life or study...

Firstly, accept that this challenge is happening - go out to meet it.
Enquire - Find more information, Look at all possibilities,
Reflect - Evaluate the facts ...Take account of what you already have…
Take action
and Communicate, communicate, communicate
Look for a mentor - someone you trust to offer a guide and direction
Persevere - Keep trying until you find a good solution
As our students prepare for the adventure of our residential trips next week these words seem particularly apt and of course resonate with those of our Aide Memoire.

I start this week’s update with a celebration of a sporting nature as one of our students has certainly risen to a competitive challenge in his chosen sport.

Andy Dang Returns Triumphant from Kids Golf World Championship in Malaysia

Year 8 student, Andy Dang has recently returned from the Kids Golf World Championships in Malaysia as champion of his division, for the second time.

Andy has been playing golf for as long as he has been studying at BIS, since he was 5 years old, so we have been in the very fortunate position to watch Andy develop his skills and his professionalism over the years.  Huge congratulations to Andy on his thoroughly deserved success in the Kids Golf World Championships once again.

Welcome back coffee morning for all parents at the Junior Campus

It was a pleasure to meet parents and begin the morning with conversation over coffee on Thursday. The opportunity to speak with you about our co-curricular offerings, reading for pleasure, the importance of the arts and several other topics was as invaluable as it is enjoyable. Our Community Services team also shared some information about our community partnerships. Thanks to our wonderful Primary and Secondary PTGs for arranging the event and to all those parents who came along to help provide a warm welcome for our new families.

Sustainability in Action - Paperless D2MUN 2017

The D2MUN, D2 Model United Nations, which was held this year here at BIS, involves students from international schools in the D2 area in a local MUN conference.  In comparison to other MUN events we join, this relatively compact event provided an opportunity for our Global Goals club and BISMUN student leadership team to think innovatively and test a possible solution to what can often be an issue when trying to make significant change - the use of paper during formal conferences and events.

It was impressive to see how our students are thinking of the UN Globals Goals not as a single action, but as an idea or a philosophy, that when applied to any action or process, can lead to long term and significant change.

Read more about their efforts to ‘Think global, act local’.

Spotlight on Learning: Teaching Never Stands Still

Our BIS staff were certainly ‘going places’ during our three teacher days at the start of term!  With a focus on outstanding teaching and learning, and what this looks like in a BIS context, we worked together – learning with and from each other – to revisit the principles of what great teaching looks like in the classroom.

Wondering what to do with your e-waste?

The primary goal of our Green Minds club at the beginning of the year was to establish an electronic waste recycle point for the BIS community.

The Green Minds team have been heavily involved in a variety of projects during term 1 and  now they are distributing collection bins around the BIS campuses.

They say

“It’s time to fix the e-waste problem - bring your old electronics to the collection bins now!”

Find out what will happen once your e-waste is placed in one of our recycling bins.

Tet Shoe Box Appeal 2018 - Season of Giving

Our Tet tree is ready and waiting at the An Phu Secondary Campus to receive the Tet shoe box gifts from students and family.  We have already received our first few shoe boxes and it will be exciting to see the collection grow over the coming weeks.

The Tet Shoe box appeal is being coordinated through our Community Services team. We hope to give Tet boxes to as many of our community partners as possible.  To find out more about the appeal and how you can take part, read Tet- Season of Giving.

Meet the Teacher: Mr Simon Williams

We continue to interview Secondary Campus teachers new to BIS this year and this week our Year 12 students, Jamie and Ji Min speak to Mr Simon Williams.

With a broad and valuable range of life and teaching experience, Mr Williams joins us as Head of Mathematics.

As he starts his second term at BIS HCMC, let’s find out a few of his thoughts on BIS, HCMC... and pineapple on pizza.

IB & IGCSE Music Recital 2018

Please come and enjoy the works of our IB & IGCSE Music students as they share their exploration of music in form and style through two informal recitals on the evenings of February 7th & 8th.

Mr Alexander explains the programme and the learning behind the 2018 IGCSE & IB Music Recital.

Messages to Parents - New Early Years and Infant Campus

Whilst we have been focusing upon re-establishing the good routines that support  life and learning at the Secondary Campus we are also playing our part in helping to prepare our whole school community for the opening of our new Early Years and Infant Campus.

This is a milestone in our school’s history and not only marks the beginning of this new, innovative and exciting new campus but the beginning of a new era for the An Phu Primary campus too.

From Monday 22nd January  ‘AP1’ will be known as BIS HCMC (Junior Campus) and ‘AP2’ will be known as BIS HCMC (Secondary Campus).

We wish our Primary students and their families the very best at this very exciting time.

For an update on our Junior and Infant Campus changes for the weeks ahead please read here.

And finally…

Spare a thought for our Year 11 and 13 students who are making final preparations for their mock examinations that take place during next week - good luck to you all as you provide your teachers with even more information that they can use to focus their teaching on later this term.

As our Year 7,8,9,10 and 12 students pack their bags for an exciting week in destinations across Vietnam and overseas I wish you all a wonderful week of challenge, fun and comradery. I look forward to hearing of your adventures on your return.
