U14A Boys Football City Championships - Match Report

08 March 2018

Ben Gilmore brings us the highs and lows of the U14A Boys Football City Championships where the BIS HCMC team fought to bring home the gold...

It was a sunny day as we arrived for what we knew would be a tough day of football. As our game approached we warmed up and then had a team talk with many inspirational speeches from our players and coach. We headed off to our starting positions and the first game begun as we heard the whistle blow.

BIS got off to a good start gaining control and scoring quickly in the game to make it 1-0 with Danny’s amazing header that pierced through the defence. As minutes went by we continued to score goals and never let ourselves down. By the end of the first game, we knew that we were there to make our mark and our 5-0 win proved just that.

After taking a well-deserved and needed break in the shade we were ready for the next challenge of the day. Our Coach Matt gave strict orders to each of us on nutrition and how to eat well. As we set up for our next game against a school we had not seen play before and who had just beaten the previous team by 6-0 we started to get worried. Once the game had started, our minds were in a good place and we put 2 goals away in the first half. In the second half, the opponents were strong with a quick goal that went past our keeper. But we knew that we weren’t done yet and towards the end we put in another goal to make it 3-1 when the final whistle blew. At this stage we were through to the semi-finals!

After a quick break and team talk we faced ISHCMC, the only other team that could have challenged our title. At this point I could sense that out team was worried but we still played on. After an even first half, we set ourselves down for a break and had a team talk. I remember as we put our hands in, our goalkeeper said something that I’ll never forget, “I believe that the two most important days in our lives are the day we were born and the day we find out why we were born and I believe that we were born to be champions, so let's get out there and take what’s ours!” With those words in our mind we stepped out onto the field with good spirits and the second half was off to a start. With good passing and an assist by Danny to Sam’s good movement he was able to score a goal and put us ahead. After that goal everyone was lifted and everybody wanted it even more. Coach Matt changed our formation into a 2-4 from a 1-1-3-1 to defend for our title. In the final minute of the game ISHCMC were given a foul just outside the box. We set up our wall, the whistle blew and the shot was taken. It went under the wall’s legs and out of nowhere, with an unbelievable save by our goalkeeper he sticks his leg out and the ball bounces out marking our victory in the semi-finals!

We were all feeling happy and excited that we made it this far but we were also anxious towards our next game and the last thing standing between us and our title. The starting team was Tyler, Ben, Joseph, Seo Jun, Sam, Jung Min and Quang. We had prepared for this very moment in training as we faced the team we had beaten earlier in the group stages TIS.

Within the first half we were already up by 3-0. In the second half we had a quick start with a goal. 10 minutes later the opponent scored but we managed to get another goal, winning the tournament with a 5-1 victory! On behalf of the BIS Boys A team we would like to thank Coach Matt for being there with us, and giving up his time to train and get us ready for this day. We would also like to thank the representatives at SSIS who organised the tournament.
