BIS Tet Gift Collection 2019 Community service representatives across all three BIS campuses collaborated to organise the collection and distribution of Tet gifts for our community partners.

Community service representatives across all three BIS campuses collaborated to organise the collection and distribution of Tet gifts for our community partners.

From December 3rd to January 30th, students, parents and teachers took part in promoting and collecting Tet gifts for our Community Service partners as a simple thank you for all the great activities they take part in with our students throughout the year.

Tet Nguyen Dan or Tet is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam. It is the Vietnamese New Year marking the arrival of spring, based on the Lunar calendar. A time for renewal and celebrations. Tet is a time for family reunions, paying respect to ancestors and the elders, and giving lucky money to children. Gifts of food are made to friends, neighbours and relatives in the days before Tet. Vietnamese New Year 2019 is a year of the “PIG”. Pig is a mild and lucky animal representing care-free fun, good fortune and wealth. Based on this year's sign, it should be filled with good luck and fun for everybody.

Tet is also a time for a financial pressure. Families have to buy new clothes, spruce up their homes, settle outstanding debts, and stock up on traditional Tet delicacies with hopes of getting rid of the past year's bad luck and bring luck to the new year.

The BIS community of students, parents and staff, find Tet a great time to give back to our community service partners and be part of the generosity and the tradition. Our tet collection is a big event at BIS. It’s a way to thank our community service partners for collaborating in our year projects and clubs throughout the academic year. The Tet collection is also a way to give back to our host country and respect it's culture and tradition.

This year, we decided to collect specific items we felt were needed the most by our community partners caring for children. BIS Secondary Campus collected UHT Milk, Junior Campus collected rice and the Early Years & Infant Campus collected stationery items and children's books.

This year, our school community showed great care and compassion towards our partners by donating an exceptional amount of milk, rice and stationery items for them to enjoy during this important time. The response from each campus has been overwhelming!

A big thank you to the Community Committee at Secondary for their support to promote the donation and help with the collection throughout this project!

We tried to deliver most of the donations before Tet so children would celebrate the new year offerings, yet donations continued to pour in until  12th February and we are still delivering more gifts this week as well.

We collected a total of 1664 kg of rice, 864.8 litres of milk and 760 stationery items and books across the three campuses.

Donations were received by the following community partners:

  1. Binh An School
  2. Mai Am Centre
  3. Nhat Hong Centre
  4. Ky Quang Pagoda
  5. Thuy’s Dreams
  6. Binh Tho School
  7. Anh Minh School
  8. Binh Trieu School
  9. Thien Phuoc Foster Home
  10. Poussieres De Vie
  11. Mai Tam House of Hope

Our community partners are extremely thankful for the contributions of BIS HCMC students, staff and parents.

On behalf of the Community Team we would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported the collection this year. With the support of the whole BIS community, we really can make a difference!
