Dear Parents,

That conversation has changed my life” she said.

A sixth form student returning after the chance to speak with Lord David Puttnam about his life and ambitions for our planet following the Tedx event earlier this year – back in school with slightly tearful eyes but a positive and determined expression on her face she told me that conversation has changed my life –  inspiration captured in a moment.

Inspiration is an easy word to use but less so to understand – it probably looks and feels a little different for everyone.

A year 8 girl stood nervously outside the Auditorium recently listening to the choir rehearse at lunchtime – her eyes were closed when I asked what she was doing. She just answered ‘this is so beautiful’- this too was inspiration captured in a moment.

The impact of moments like these should not be underestimated – it is one of the many joys of teaching to see these moments as they really can and do change lives so often.

To me it’s that moment when an inner flame kicks in and you feel that unmistakable drive and motivation to do something new or better – it is so important to notice these moments and act on them. The Year 8 girl listening to the choir is now a singing member and who knows where that will go…she has acted positively on her inspired moment, that’s the important part and I look forward to being at her first performance very much!

Whilst we are on the stage…these cast and directors are set to inspire us all very soon too..Little Shop of Horrors is nearly here – don’t forget to get your tickets.

On Tuesday I was certainly inspired by our Head Student assembly presentation, sadly their last in office, it was clear looking at the faces in the audience that students can inspire students too, I wasn’t on my own!

Our Head student team had shared their legacy, positive changes in partnership working with teachers to create new and even better ways of doing things here – new leadership roles, new approaches to improving learning in the classroom, new ways of supporting student organisation, conduct and wellbeing. Not a short list for one year! They should be very proud of their achievements as they prepare to hand over the baton to a new Head Student team shortly.  My sincere thanks to Jimin, Marwin and Ana for all their hard work and determination – you have been an inspiration!

If inspiration is when you feel ‘a deep-rooted passion and motivation to do something’ many of our swimmers were so definitely inspired when they met three time Olympian James Goddard this week – a great sportsman and a great role model for young people. Please take time to read about his exciting visit too.

We place a great value on bringing inspirational role models to BIS to meet with our students - through their stories we are showing students that you can often go beyond what you thought possible, we demonstrate to students there really is no limit to their potential.

Overview of the week’s activities

Kickboxing and Meditation for Year 11 ILS

As we approach the end of term and our Year 11 students are immersing themselves fully in their preparation for their upcoming IGCSE exams, we feel it is important that they maintain their life balance and take some time out to relax, unwind and refocus to reinforce  positive attitudes.

Mr Robbie Alexander, Head of Year 11, shares more about the activities that our Year 11 students have been taking part in during recent ILS lessons: kickboxing and meditation with their wellbeing in mind.
