Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 17/05/2019

Dear Parents,

The PTG AGM took place on Thursday afternoon. As I listened to our PTG accounts of the year’s events I was once again reminded of the incredible lengths our teams have gone to in providing a warm welcome to our new families, in creating events for all of us to gather and share common interests and have fun, in raising awareness of and funds for our community partners, in showing how much we care about the environment and sustainability.

The strong values and sheer energy on show during the evening was simply inspirational. Building even stronger connections and relationships within our community and between BIS and others has driven much the PTG work this year, the impact of this year’s projects shows just how well this has been achieved.

So, I want to begin this week’s newsletter with a huge “Thank you” to all of our PTG lead team and all involved in the activities and events during the 2018-19 year.

Sadly, we say farewell to some parents in key roles who move on this year and so this was our opportunity to say a special thank you to them and announce our new PTG Executive team. Full details and bios will be posted on the PTG Blog shortly but I would particularly like to welcome Mel Rowe to her new post as PTG Chairperson. Many of you will know Mel who is from Australia and has been an active part of our PTG Exec for the last two years, and has been highly involved in the school community generally. Mel has served as Treasurer for the Primary PTG and as Community Services Coordinator for the Secondary PTG contributing so much to all of our work together. I very much look forward to working with Mel as we build upon the achievements of this years team who were so ably and energetically led by Christine Avril.

Can I encourage you to attend our weekly PTG meetings held on the Secondary Campus at 8:30 am each Wednesday to join in the discussion, networking and fun.

Looking forward to the week’s ahead we have so much in prospect to enjoy including the eagerly anticipated Night of the Arts with exciting new performance aspects to showcase this year. The Class of 2019 Graduation takes place next weekend as the IB examinations draw to a close, we are all looking forward to this very special celebration. The Year 7 and 8 are getting ready for an action packed weekof learning beyond the classroom in ourWeek Without Walls too.

Con Dao Field Trip for Year 12 IBDP Students

BIS - Con Dao Field Trip for Year 12 IBDP Students

“Being able to enjoy an applied learning style within the field trip was my favourite aspect. We were able to achieve so much: from learning facts about snails to collecting data for an IA; all the way learning about the IB ecology topic… and all in the outdoors.”  Serena Huang (Biology)

Year 12 Geographers, Biologists and Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) students had the excellent opportunity to consolidate their classroom learning about coastal systems and ecology on their recent field trip to Con Dao.

Nam-Phong Racing are Heading to Abu Dhabi for the F1 in Schools World Finals in 2019

Nam Phong Racing 2019 - BIS HCMC

Last year, IB students from the British International School HCMC, took to the world stage as the sole representatives for Vietnam in the high profile F1 in Schools World Finals in Singapore. That team, Nam Phong Racing, were the latest in an established BIS HCMC attendance at the World Finals.  Nam Phong Racing have inspired the next generation team to take up the challenge who have kept the same team name. They now prepare for their own World Finals, this year in Abu Dhabi.  We wish the team all the very best of luck as they continue to develop and refine their race vehicle and prepare to meet exceptionally high standards of design and performance.

Read their story and find out how you can follow our Nam Phong Racing team on their journey to the F1 in Schools 2019 World Finals in Abu Dhabi.
