Kirsty Burkhill

Kirsty Elizabeth Burkhill (3)

Year 6 Teacher, Head of Year 6

I began my teaching career in September 2007, having graduated from The Bishop Grosseteste Teaching University with a 2:1 BA Hons in History and Education Studies as well as a PGCE. I have taught in three different schools during my time in the UK ranging from an inner city school with over 800 pupils on roll to a small village school with only 63 children on roll. I have been fortunate enough to experience many different CPD opportunities and as a result have recently completed my National Professional Qualification for Senior Leaders; a qualification which is well recognised in the UK for teachers aspiring to become deputy heads.

During my nine years of teaching I have been fortunate to work with children from 7-11 years old and with a variety of children with SEND needs; helping all of them to explore and learn based on the UK National Curriculum. My passion in any school is to inspire all children to become avid readers, which I have been able to pursue through a previous role as English Co-ordinator. I also feel strongly about providing children with experiences outside the classroom, resulting in my position as the Educational Visits Co-ordinator at my previous UK school. I really enjoy the amazing 'out of school' experiences I BSB provide.

I was born into a military family, the oldest of 2 children. My father is a serving member of the British Royal Air Force and it is largely due to him that I have developed a passion to travel and see the world. I was fortunate enough to visit friends who live in Beijing in 2015 and instantly fell in love with the vibrant, inspiring city. I knew the day I boarded the plane to come home that I wanted to come back and I am pleased that BSB have given me this fantastic opportunity. One day I want to become a deputy head, but before I take on this challenge, I want to broaden my experiences and seek out further opportunities, hence me wanting to teach at an inspiring international school such as BSB.

I knew I wanted to become a teacher from the age of 8, when I saw a group of newly qualified teachers walking out from their graduation ceremony in a nearby cathedral. I was inspired by their passion and enthusiasm and I instantly knew I wanted to be one of them. On becoming a teacher, I also knew that my main aim was to ensure every child in my classroom had the best possible opportunities provided to them; I want them to always remember something from the time they were in my class. I am passionate about many things, not just in the classroom, but also outside of school. I am a keen charity volunteer and have spent much of my time in the UK working for the Girl Guiding Association and The Cinnamon Trust.
