From North Broward Prep to Pomona College

North Broward Preparatory School is proud to celebrate senior Christopher Evans, who has been awarded the prestigious Posse Scholarship to Pomona College. This honor recognizes exceptional students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities. Christopher reflects these qualities in everything he does, and his time at North Broward Prep has played a meaningful role in his growth as a leader.

A Path Toward Purpose

Christopher first learned about the Posse Scholarship through his College Advisor, Ana Farrand, toward the end of his junior year. She introduced him to the program and guided him through the early stages of the process. Although he had not known much about the Posse Scholarship beforehand, he quickly connected with its mission once he began exploring it. The Posse Foundation brings together groups of likeminded students who support one another, solve problems collaboratively, and grow into the best versions of themselves. Each Posse becomes a small community of global citizens who share values, goals, and a commitment to leadership.

In Miami, only sixty students are selected to participate in the process. Ten are ultimately chosen for Pomona College. Christopher was one of them.

A Rigorous and Inspiring Selection Process

The Posse interview process is known for being both challenging and deeply reflective. Christopher began by completing an application over the summer, which allowed the Posse team to learn about his background, academic performance, and personal values.

The first interview, known as the Dynamic Assessment Process, brought together a large group of students who were evaluated on their ability to collaborate, communicate, and think creatively. Christopher and his peers completed hands‑on challenges, including building a tower using only one hand, tape, and spaghetti. They also took part in group discussions on complex issues. Posse staff and alumni observed how each student contributed, listened, and demonstrated leadership. The purpose was to understand their character and how they function within a team.

The second interview was more traditional and allowed the Posse staff to get to know Christopher on a deeper level. They explored his goals, his story, and the values that guide him. After advancing to the final round, Christopher joined a group of twenty students, knowing that only ten would be selected. This final stage focused on connection, collaboration, and the ability to thrive within a close community.

When Christopher heard his name announced at the award ceremony, he felt overwhelming excitement. He met the other students who would become his Posse at Pomona College, and the group bonded immediately. He also had the opportunity to meet Eddie Pickett, the Assistant Vice President and Director of Admissions at Pomona College, which made the moment even more meaningful.

Preparing for Pomona

Before heading to Pomona, Christopher will participate in weekly Pre Collegiate Training sessions. These gatherings help Posse Scholars strengthen their leadership skills, build trust within their cohort, and prepare for the academic and social transition to college. Retreats and workshops allow them to grow as changemakers and develop the confidence needed to thrive.

How North Broward Prep Helped Shape Christopher's Journey

Christopher credits North Broward Prep for playing a major role in his development as a leader and global citizen. The school’s emphasis on global citizenship helped him understand the importance of working together to create meaningful change. Through programs like Sparking Sustainability with Mrs. Vester, Christopher learned about sustainable farming and environmental stewardship. These experiences inspired him to take action on campus by introducing chickens into a sustainable ecosystem, creating garden beds, and promoting natural pest control. His work even supported the cafeteria by providing fresh eggs. This initiative became the foundation of his IB project and strengthened his passion for sustainability

A Commitment to Service Beyond Campus

Christophers dedication to helping others extends far beyond North Broward Prep. After seeing images of devastation in Haiti, he told his parents he wanted to help. His first fundraiser was a lemonade stand that raised thirty dollars, but he dreamed of building a house for a family in need. That dream grew into a large-scale project that has now raised more than fifty thousand dollars, funding three clean water wells and three concrete homes in destitute Haitian villages.

Only after the project gained momentum did Christopher share his story in a TED Talk during sixth grade, inspiring even more members of the NBPS community to get involved.

His work inspired younger students, including a group of fifth graders (pictured below) who went on to launch Project Honduras. Christopher also helped organize HOPE Walks, encouraging others to join him in raising money and awareness. His leadership has sparked a ripple effect of compassion and action throughout the NBPS community.

The IB Experience

Christopher chose to pursue the IB Diploma because he loved the way it encourages students to view the world through a lens of curiosity and reflection. Theory of Knowledge became especially meaningful to him, prompting him to ask questions about how we understand what we know. He found the IB program rigorous but incredibly rewarding, supported by teachers and advisors who were always ready to help. The IB core not only strengthened his academic skills but also deepened his desire to learn about the world and make a difference.

Looking Ahead to Pomona College

At Pomona, Christopher plans to study molecular biology. He has always been fascinated by the unseen world of cells, evolution, and the systems that allow life to function. His AP Biology teacher, Mrs.Carreño played a major role in inspiring him to pursue this field. The challenges of the course fueled his curiosity and helped him discover his passion for scientific inquiry.

Christopher is excited to join a community of students who share his interest in STEM. Through the Claremont Colleges Consortium, he will have access to courses and resources across seven institutions, including Harvey Mudd and Scripps. He looks forward to building strong connections within his Posse and working together to support one another throughout college.

A Future Changemaker

Christopher believes the Posse community will be a lifelong source of support. He knows that the relationships he forms will help him grow as a leader and as a person. His goal is simple yet powerful. He wants to change the world.

North Broward Prep could not be more proud of Christopher Evans. His compassion, leadership, and determination reflect thevery best of our school community. We cannot wait to see all that he will accomplish at Pomona College and beyond.
