Year 9 Careers Carousel and GCSE Taster Sessions

Over the course of the year, we have hosted a variety of events to allow students to reflect on their strengths, interests and future aspirations. Last week, BSKL hosted the Careers Carousel and we organised for Year 9 students to take part in GCSE Taster Sessions.

The Year 9 Careers Carousel is an event that we host annually, designed to inform students about different careers and to inspire them. This year we were fortunate to have 25 skilled professionals on site to meet our students. Similarly, we were able to speak to the ex Vice President of of Digital Marketing at Paramount Pictures via Skype at lunchtime.

During this key event, students displayed fantastic communication skills and teachers were impressed with the questions they asked our volunteers. Overall, students left the event feeling informed, enthused and keen to continue to work towards their long term goals. We conducted a student survey after the event and one student stated: ‘I liked the careers carousel as it allowed me to find out more about other fields that I did not really consider. It also helped me plan and know when I should make decisions.'

Students also spent time in GCSE taster sessions to allow them to envisage what it would be like studying those subjects at GCSE/iGCSE level. Students were able to choose which lessons they attended (6 in total) and staff members designed lessons that would allow students to understand the requirements of that subject at Key Stage 4. In our student survey a student said: ‘I found the GCSE Taster sessions good; they gave an insight of what the GCSEs will be like in the future.’

As Year 9 students are busy deciding which GCSE/iGCSE subjects to take, we also created this video to assist in the decision making process. This video features the thoughts, feelings and experiences of KS4 students with regards to the different ‘option’ subjects. Students will be able to gain a ‘pupil perspective’ of the different ‘option’ subjects from watching this video.

Finally, thank you to all the Year 9 parents for the continued support with the ‘Options Pathway’. We have one final event before the 12 February deadline: the one to one careers interviews which will take place on Friday 25th January. We look forward to meeting you to discuss your child’s future.
