Dear DCIS Parents and Guardians,
The summer term is always relatively short but still manages to pack in a great deal of activity!
After a lovely morning celebrating the milestone of finishing Year 11, examinations have now started for these students. The iGCSE exams run until mid-June so the students will enjoy a brief respite before starting back in August to commence their IB courses. Next year will see our first IB cohort graduation and we are planning a memorable ceremony for these pioneering students. These year 12 students are currently busy finalising their university choices as they will be submitting their applications early next term.
Our Secondary Individual Needs group had a very successful trip to Tioman Island two weeks ago. They had the opportunity to challenge themselves in new environments, using new skills. The feedback from the students was exceptional, they had a fantastic time and learned a great deal. Our final residential of the year happened this week. Year 3 started their outdoor adventures with a night at the zoo. It was a brilliant experience with their night spent under canvas at the edge of a stunning lake after a busy day of exploring the zoo and Night Safari. This is the first step on their journey at DCIS with outdoor adventure. Each year’s activity builds upon the previous so that children add to their experiences and learn to cope with greater challenges. In Year 4 they will head to Malaysia for 2 nights and then in a few years’ time the Gold Duke of Edinburgh in Years 12 and 13.
The house system has really taken hold this year thanks to the untiring leadership of Mr. Liperis. The house junk creative arts day brought together STEAM, team work skills and a chance for house to explore our school vision and learn more about the area of Singapore their house is named after.
Book week was also a great success this year with activities across the school appropriate to each age range. Mr. O’Shea, our acting Secondary Deputy Head, got a quick introduction to senior leadership in an age 3 – 18 school as he joined the rest of the senior team in dressing up as the main characters from 101 Dalmatians. We had a Board Meeting that day so I sat opposite my boss for most of the day dressed as a dog!
Ms Good, Mr. Liperis and Mr. Johnson took our team to the FOBISIA Primary Games in Phuket earlier this month. This was our third regional sports competition this academic year and the team did very well coming back with over 200 individual medals, 5 trophies and a new Under 11 Girls High jump record (congratulations to Frances). There was also a large group of travelling supporters sporting their own team t-shirts cheering on our athletes. This week these parents and the ‘L Team ‘jointly hosted a pizza evening to watch the FOBISIA video, a memento of the three days, and present tokens of thanks to the staff who took the team.
In preparation for the new academic year we will be extending and improving our library and resource facilities, our new librarian came in last week to review the plans and is very excited to be joining us in August. Over the half term holiday we will be moving three trees from outside A block as we start to prepare the site for the Summer works. We are very proud of our green campus so we will be replanting to maintain our environmental balance of nature.
I wish all families a great half term.
