DCIS Students Participated in NAE STEAM Week at MIT

In the early hours of the morning on Sunday 28th April, four intrepid Year 5 students started the long journey to Boston in the United States. Over a day later, the children excitedly arrived at their hotel and enjoyed a well earned rest.

Over one hundred children from 26 Nord Anglia schools from all across the globe were also in attendance, giving our children a fantastic opportunity to learn and collaborate with others.

The action packed week included lectures from MIT professors, a range of workshops, the opportunity to meet and talk to MIT students, a tour of Harvard University and half a day to be tourists in this wonderful city. The children were inspired during many moments of the week. One highlight was meeting the STEAM Superhero – Epic Identity, Professor Leia Stirling – who specialises in wearable technology. Attending a lecture from MIT Professor Angela Belcher, who has created batteries from nature was fascinating. (View Video - Angela Belcher: Using nature to grow batteries)

Perhaps the most exciting day involved an MIT course that students take, which had been condensed into one day - 2.009: An Iconic MechE Class  – the children had to use the process of IDEATE – MAKE – TEST to design their own product to help the visually impaired. It was a unique and wonderful experience that provided the children with a glimpse into what life at the top university in the world is like.
