Dover Court Years 10 and 12 Mandarin Trip to Chinatown

Years 10 and 12 Mandarin students enjoyed a wonderful trip to Chinatown last week.

  • Year 10 and 13 Mandarin Trip to Chinatown
  • Year 10 and 13 Mandarin Trip to Chinatown
  • Year 10 and 13 Mandarin Trip to Chinatown
  • Year 10 and 13 Mandarin Trip to Chinatown
  • Year 10 and 13 Mandarin Trip to Chinatown

The purpose of the trip to Chinatown was to expose the students to everyday Mandarin and to learn about the variety of cultures in Singapore and the history behind them. We learned about the Hindu culture, the Muslim culture, and the history behind the Chinese entering Singapore.

The places we visited were the Sri Maariamman temple, Lai Chun Yuen, Jamae Mosque, Chinatown Complex – Wet market and the Tanjong Pagar Shophouses.

Each site and shop were interesting. Each one represented the beautiful cultures that Singapore represents. It was the first time for most of us to be able to experience in such depth each religion and it was a very significant moment for us all. It was also very entertaining to interact with the year 10 students and discuss with them their cultural experience. Everyone has a different background.

Overall, the entire trip was quite a special experience to part of Singapore I, myself, had never explored before. Thank you to our Mandarin teachers for organising this trip.
