In Year 7 German class, we are working on poems and looking at different kinds of poems.
With the classic author Friedrich Schiller and his Poem “Hope”, (“Hoffnung”) we could connect our knowledge of rhyme scheme, the use of stanzas as well as look at his clear use of words and language.
How joy can make a poem meaningful was shown with Erich Kästner who makes use of lots of word play in the “Development of manhood”, “Entwicklung der Menschheit”.
With Bertolt Brecht and his poem “Pleasures” – “Vergnügungen” we saw a modern type of poem just using words as “association-clouds” but still using the difficult word “dialectic” what the students had to inquire on.
Inquiry was incorporated in our work which makes the students develop their research skills and evaluate results. We also learned about copyright; we couldn’t find one poem on the Internet because it was forbidden to distribute it.
I am always looking forward to the lesson of Year 7 – it is an amazing class. Please see examples from 3 of our young poets, how creative the students were on the task of writing a poem with numbers and enjambement, or to the subject “pleasures - “Vergnügungen”.
