Which Witch Lives There?

The Foundation 1 children have been reading Room on the Broom, by Julia Donaldson and have become fascinated in all things “witchy”. Our messy room has been transformed into a witch’s house, complete with a potion’s lab, sensory experimentation room, wacky workshop and brewing kitchen

Role play is a fantastic way for children to express their creativity and build on important social skills such as communication, teamwork, respect and empathy. Whilst playing alongside each other in an imaginary world the children need to negotiate who’s turn it is; how they will work together to improve the role play; value each other’s ideas; and understand that if someone has a different idea to your own, it doesn’t mean it is not valid.

The Meerkats and Cheetah’s have worked on all these skills amicably, learning and growing together. They have crushed spices in a mortar and pestle to add to multicoloured, potent smelling potions; they have invented spooky and slimy goo full of eyeballs and other delights; they have studied (toy) minibeasts under magnifying glasses and identified what needs to be added to the cauldron; and they have made countless meals for a hungry witch from playdoh. All the while, they have played and inquired harmoniously together, strengthening their bond and learning from one another.

Stop by Foundation 1 in the coming week and one of the students will happily serve you up a fresh witchy brew.
