Primary welcomes new friends - Zippy and Apple

At NAIS Manila, we are always looking for proactive ways to promote well-being in our young learners.

Over the past year our staff had identified PSHE as an area that they felt we could move forward in. Essentially we were looking for something that empower our Key Stage 1 children to make better decisions and have strategies to cope better, in situations that challenged them.

I first saw Zippy and Apple's Friends in action in St. Andrews (a fantastic NAE School in Bangkok), and it was obvious that this was something we could use in Manila. Since we have embedded this in our curriculum, other NAE Schools within South East Asia have followed suit - but we are currently the only International School in the Philippines offering Zippy and Apple's Friends.

Our Year 3 Teacher, Miss McCrann explains more about Zippy and Apple's Friends...

This year we welcome two new friends to NAIS Manila - Zippy and Apple.

Over the coming year, parents and carers may hear about these creatures as Years 1 to 4 participate in our new PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) Curriculum.

Zippy’s Friends is a program designed to help your child with their personal, social and emotional wellbeing. It was designed by the organisation Partnership for Children, alongside other educators. Over two decades it has been taught in over 30 countries.

Students will participate in 24 sessions throughout the year, covering the following topics: Feelings, Communication, Friendship, Conflict, Change and Loss, as well as Moving Forward. Each concept will be approached in a child-friendly way through stories, role-play and games.

Years 1 and 2 (KS1) will follow the tales of Zippy, the stick insect, and his owner Tig. While Years 3 and 4 will focus on Apple, the pet hamster. While this curriculum only runs for one year, the children will be equipped with lifelong skills to take with them throughout their school career, and beyond.

Over the coming months, we hope the students will share with you what they have been learning. Pupils will be better able to identify different feelings, as well as suggest strategies for coping with these. If taught these skills early on, they are far better equipped to handle life’s potential ups and downs.

At certain points throughout the year, students may ask for family members to assist with Home Activities. While these are optional, they will provide an invaluable opportunity to engage in dialogue with your child about their feelings and other important issues.

All staff delivering these lessons have been specifically trained. However, if you have concerns about any of the issues being covered do not hesitate to contact you child’s class teacher.
