Off to a Good Start

Chris Pooley (14 posts) Head of Primary View Profile

It’s hard to believe that we are only a few weeks into our Virtual Schooling Experience (VSE) at NAIS Manila. Throughout our Primary School, the children have settled into routines and are working hard to meet the expectations set in a new year group. There has been some outstanding work produced through our VSE.

IT & Virtual Schooling

With Secondary School jumping onboard for the 20/21 Academic Year, we now have consistent use of Google Classroom throughout the whole school. Children (even the young ones) are becoming more and more confident with the use of technology and it has certainly helped with the transition into a new class.

Our IT Department has been a fantastic support to parents, helping with troubleshooting advice for a range of technical problems in homes around the globe. Should you need any technical support, please reach out to them itdepartment@naismanila.edu.ph

Early Years

Our youngest children have settled in well and have been thoroughly enjoying their hands-on learning. Last week Mr. Barnett, his Early Years Team and I attended a webinar with colleagues from the 66 NAE schools to introduce Virtual Story Sacks. These are a brand-new engaging resource designed for EYFS children and parents. Virtual Story Sacks will only be available in the Philippines for NAIS Manila students - Look out for details coming from Mr. Barnett as these will launch in early September. Mr. Barnett (Richard.barnett@naismanila.edu.ph) has certainly hit the ground running in his new position, leading EYFS and Key Stage 1.

Baseline Assessments Mr Hickman has emailed parents with details of ‘baseline assessments’ for children in Year 2 to Year 6.

Key Stage 1

All Key Stage 1 children have now had their initial phonics baseline and have been split into phonics groups that allow the teachers to cater for the individual needs of students. It’s great to see daily phonics sessions happening virtually and I have enjoyed the lessons that I have popped into. Phonics form the building blocks that will give children the foundation that they need, to gain confidence and progress (more on this in my next blog).

Key Stage 2

As we expected, our oldest children in Primary have settled in the fastest. There is some outstanding work being produced. Mr. Hickman (jeremy.hickman@naismanila.edu.ph) has focused his Key Stage 2 team on two key areas of our curriculum and your children will have now been signed up to two fantastic online learning websites (https://www.getepic.com/ and https://www.mangahigh.com/en/).

Despite all of the changes and fads in education over the years, the importance of reading good quality texts and using & applying in maths, still form the backbone of any curriculum. This is even more powerful when children get the opportunity to use it throughout the curriculum (in Artic explorer days or during mindfulness activities).

SPLAT & Discovery Kits

I’m sure your children were very excited to receive their first learning resource packs (you may have also seen the pictures on our Facebook and Instagram sites). Stop Play Learn and Think (SPLAT) bags for our younger children and Discovery bags for our Key Stage 2 children will certainly add to our VSE. Class teachers filled the bags to help children with Virtual Schooling at home and these will evolve over the coming weeks.

As mentioned before, some of the work being produced by children is outstanding and deserves to be in their books. Please contact your child’s class teacher for any questions or individual suggestions if you feel there is something that might support your child at home. The hand-written notes were a touch of class from our teachers and reinforce the ‘personal approach’ that we are so proud of at NAIS Manila.

Baseline Assessments

Mr. Hickman has emailed parents with details of ‘Baseline Assessments’ for children in Year 2 to Year 6. These are something that we have carried out for the past 5 years at NAIS Manila and the children are comfortable with.

The GL Baselines are not a pass/fail assessment or a way of producing a percentage for attainment. The Baselines are an important way to ensure that children make excellent individual academic progress and teachers are able to tailor their curriculum to meet to unique needs of individual children.

Additional Parent Teacher Consultations (PTC) for 20/21

As parents, we understand that excellent academic progress can look very different in individual children. To keep you updated about your child’s progress, to discuss how your child has settled in and review the Baseline Assessments, all parents will be invited to an additional PTC this year. These meetings will take place over a two-week period starting on Monday 14th September. Class teachers will contact parents directly about this nearer to the time and following the completion of our baseline assessments.

Although it may be very early in the Academic Year, there is a lot of good work going on and it is great to see the updates to Virtual Schooling for the 20/21 Academic Year starting to have an impact on learning!

Best,
Chris
