GC Blog #6: Rube Goldberg Challenge

Last August, a huge focus for the Science and STEAM teachers at school was to consider how children can tackle these subjects at home. We did not want children to miss out on important Science experiments and STEAM challenges that they would normally be doing each week at school.

One of the first STEAM activities that were set for NAIS Manila Students was the Rube Goldberg Challenge.

A Rube Goldberg machine is an overly complicated invention that performs a simple task. The machines are made from simple objects that combine with one another to create one long chain reaction without any human interference.

You can find many examples on Joseph's Machines on YouTube.

The first challenge was to create a Rube Goldberg Machine to creatively land a ball in a cup and we received an amazing number of entries like this one from Josh...

Here are a few more videos from our students;

Santia and Gabby

It was so fun even I had a go at it myself!

There are two more Rube Goldberg Challenges to have a go at:

  1. To create a Rube Goldberg Machine to turn on a light
  2. To create a Rube Goldberg Machine to close a door.

Once you've created your Rube Goldberg Challenge send it to me at or post it on the Global Campus Rube Goldberg Challenge Wall.

These challenges are wonderful as they help teach the importance of trial and error, resilience, problem-solving, iteration skills and they also flex your design thinking muscles.

Be creative and have fun building your machines!

Catch me here again next Wednesday for another Global Campus Weekly.
