World Autism Day is celebrated on 2nd April each year. As this year it falls on a Sunday towards the end of term, we will be raising awareness by asking students and staff to come into school on the last day of school (Friday 7th April) in non-uniform and wearing something blue as part of the #LIUB (Light It Up Blue) campaign. Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), refers to a wide range of conditions characterised by difficulties with social and communication skills, repetitive behaviours and challenges with speech and non-verbal communication. The term 'spectrum' reflects the wide variation in strengths and challenges presented in each individual.
Current estimations suggest up to 1 in 100 individuals may present with difficulties related to Autism. Individuals who are on the spectrum may need additional support to learn social skills and acquire speech and language. Some individuals also have strengths in certain areas such as visual processing, memory and sequencing skills.
It is important to recognise that children with Autism grow up to be adults with Autism - it is not a condition someone will grow out of however individuals can learn the skills they need to manage their challenges more effectively. As yet, the cause of Autism is unknown and research suggests it is likely a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Please join us in celebrating individual difference at DCIS on Friday 7th April.

Our Year 7 students went on two amazing trips to Sibu Island, Malaysia, for their year group residential. Surrounded by the beauty of nature and immersed in a vibrant new culture, students had the chance to connect with their friends and make memories that will last forever.
